Embarking on a new body of work is akin to undertaking an exploration into the unknown and it is exhilarating and slightly intimidating as you stare into the void to see what you can uncover. In my new series, From Water, I seek to examine and consider one of the most ubiquitous of substances, water. The water that engulfs our planet is an irreducible mystery.

Water is vital for all forms of life and that is brought into clear focus considering NASA’s motto for finding other life forms is to “follow the water” so my journey to follow the water has been an interesting and illuminating delve into the physical, historical and mythical attributes of water. It was interesting to research the physical and material properties but ultimately it was the beauty, vastness and transcendent qualities that I wanted to focus on in this new body of work.

Water is in constant motion and to capture the fluidity of water in glass, that is water- like even in a solid state, was one objective. The organic, totemic forms are an amalgam of all things that come from water and simultaneously a play on seeing objects appear as forms in the waves, currents and tides thus making the ephemeral physical in glass.  The forms are purposefully amorphous, ambiguous and mysterious to open a portal for exploration. Curiosity is essential in sustaining an artistic practice and this work is the physical manifestation of curiosity.
